Diwali festival or Deepawali is a festival that fills our heart with happiness, warmth, and hope. The colorful decorations around cities, twinkling diyas in every home, the aroma of sweets, and the sound of crackers make this time of year truly magical. It is the time of renewal, gratitude and, most importantly, time to practice the spirit of forgiveness and joy of giving. This festival teaches us the true deepavali gift; valuable life lessons that go beyond rituals, offering a chance to reflect on deeper values like generosity and thankfulness
Why the Diwali Celebration Is More Than Just Lights and Firecrackers
The Deepawali celebration symbolizes the timeless triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. It commemorates the joyful homecoming of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile, when the people illuminated the city with countless diyas to welcome him. This festival is also devoted to the worship of Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, and Lord Ganesha, who is revered as the remover of obstacles and the harbinger of new beginnings.
Lighting diyas reminds us that there is always hope — that goodness can triumph over negativity. In today’s world, filled with racism, hatred, classism, and poverty, this message of light and hope holds even greater significance. It urges us to illuminate hearts, not just homes.
Diwali Celebration with Kindness, Light, and Lasting Impact
Deepavali is a celebration of the human spirit, the triumph of hope, and the joy of giving. As we illuminate our homes with diyas and decorate our lives with color and cheer, it is the perfect time to celebrate all living beings by respecting nature and wildlife. This Deepavali, let us move beyond rituals and embrace the true joy of giving, by supporting causes that bring lasting change to our world. The true spirit of Diwali lies in spreading joy and practicing compassion. While children dream of access to education, women work towards self-reliance, and families long for a better future, the act of giving brings deeper meaning to the celebration.
In this spirit, I’m spotlighting two remarkable organizations—The EarthSaviours Foundation and The Jane Goodall Institute—whose work continues to inspire compassion, dignity, and action.
The EarthSaviours Foundation: Bringing Light to the Forgotten
Founded by the late Ravi Kalra, The EarthSaviours Foundation is a Gurgaon-based NGO dedicated to uplifting the most marginalized members of society. They work tirelessly to rescue abandoned senior citizens, provide shelter to the homeless, and support destitute individuals with food, medical care, and education. Their initiatives also include vocational training and livelihood support, helping people regain independence and dignity.
This Deepavali, your Deepavali gift to EarthSaviours Foundation can offer more than just material aid—it can restore hope and rebuild lives. In a world where homelessness and poverty remain harsh realities, your contribution embodies the joy of giving, turning the festival into a beacon of kindness and purpose.
Remembering Jane Goodall: A Legacy of Compassion That Lives On
As we celebrate the Diwali celebration of 2025, we also pause to honor the memory of Dr. Jane Goodall, the legendary primatologist, humanitarian, and conservationist, who passed away recently. Though she is no longer with us, her legacy through the Jane Goodall Institute lives on, continuing her mission of wildlife conservation, animal welfare, and community education.
The Jane Goodall Institute supports environmental programs across the globe, from protecting endangered chimpanzees to educating the next generation on sustainable living and the interconnectedness of all life. Her life’s work was a testament to compassion—not only for animals, but for all beings who share this Earth.
By supporting animal rights and treating every living being with compassion, we carry forward the legacy of Jane Goodall — a woman whose life was devoted to protecting animals, advocating for wildlife conservation, and nurturing harmony between humans and nature. This Deepavali, your Deepavali gift can be more than symbolic. By respecting wildlife, protecting animals, and cherishing the Earth and all who live on it, we honor her memory and keep her vision alive. Let the joy of giving this season extend to every being that shares our planet.
In Jane Goodall’s own words: “Everyone has a role to play. You may not realize it yet, but I want you to know: your life matters. You have the power to choose the difference you want to make. There is hope. Don’t lose hope. We are all part of Mother Nature — connected to everything, and responsible for everything. We owe it to the children, and to future generations, to do everything in our power to build a better world.”
The Joy of Giving: A Festival Beyond Fireworks
When we look beyond the festivities and choose to give with intention, Deepavali becomes a celebration of purpose. Whether it’s through supporting EarthSaviours Foundation or carrying forward Jane Goodall’s vision, your Deepavali gift becomes a symbol of compassion and courage.
This year, let’s celebrate diwali with care for a kinder Tomorrow:
- Let’s celebrate in a way we treat our planet and all living beings. Whether it’s lending a helping hand to those in need, showing kindness to individuals with special needs, or simply being more mindful — like avoiding excessive honking in traffic to reduce stress for animals — small actions can create meaningful change.
- Let’s also embrace eco-friendly celebrations by choosing natural decorations, reducing waste, and celebrating in harmony with nature. These thoughtful choices not only protect the environment but also keep the true spirit of Diwali alive.
- And while we enjoy the festive cheer, let’s not forget our animal friends. The loud noise from fireworks can be distressing to them. A little consideration goes a long way — from reducing noise to caring for strays around us.
- Finally, let’s focus on the joy of homemade traditions. Preparing sweets at home and sharing them with family and neighbors brings warmth, connection, and health — turning simple gestures into lasting memories.
Together, these small but meaningful choices can help make our Diwali celebration more compassionate, conscious, and deeply fulfilling.
In our fast-paced lives, it’s easy to get caught up in personal ambitions and forget the joy that comes from helping others. I’d like to take a moment to talk about someone who has supported an entire community and inspired the youth of Assam — giving them strength, courage, and so much more. Yes, I’m talking about Zubeen Garg or Zubeen da for us. Despite his busy schedule, he has always been there to help others. He helped countless families in need, supported education for underprivileged children, and provided aid during natural disasters. As a fellow Assamese and an advocate for goodwill, I believe it is essential that we all learn to respect and help one another in need. Let’s learn from him about the true joy of giving.
Conclusion: A Celebration of Giving and Gratitude
Diwali, with its vibrant traditions and profound significance, imparts valuable life lessons that go well beyond the festivities. It reminds us of the joy found in generosity, the strength of gratitude, and the value of meaningful connections. These lessons encourage us to live with greater awareness, kindness, and appreciation. Let’s not forget, our actions matter, and it’s up to us to choose the kind of impact we want to make. Whether it’s through giving, showing gratitude, or tapping into our inner resilience, Diwali inspires us to grow in ways that last far beyond the celebration itself.
