Healthcare Spotlight: Decoding Clinical Genetics with Dr Prerana Modani

ExpertVerse, HealthcareSpotlight,

In the rapidly evolving landscape of modern medicine, few disciplines hold as much transformative promise as Medical Genetics. Long considered a niche field limited to theoretical diagnosis, clinical genetics has emerged as a cornerstone of preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic healthcare. Today, we highlight one such pioneer Dr. Prerana Modani, a distinguished clinician who pursued her DM in Medical Genetics when the field was still in its infancy in India. Through her academic focus and clinical advocacy, she contributes to a growing movement that is reshaping how rare disorders are understood and managed nationwide.

In this edition of Expert.Verse HealthcareSpotlight, features Dr. Prerana Modani’s inspiring journey, detailing her transition from top-tier academic training in Pediatrics to advanced clinical genetics, her pioneering public advocacy, and her vision for the future of precision medicine.

Genetics is transforming healthcare by enabling earlier diagnosis, personalized management, and informed family planning. Raising awareness about genetic disorders and timely referral to a clinical geneticist can significantly improve patient outcomes and empower families with accurate information and support.” Dr Prerana Modani

Academic Foundation and Early Excellence

Hailing from Delhi, Dr. Prerana demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to academic excellence from an early age. Achieving a perfect 10 CGPA in Class X and 83% in Class XII under the CBSE curriculum, her school years were marked by consistent distinction. A frequent participant and top ranker in national competitive platforms, including the National Science Olympiad, she earned multiple scholarships, academic awards, debate honors, and quiz titles.

Dr. Prerana earned her MBBS degree from Mahatma Gandhi Medical College & Hospital in Jaipur, establishing a robust clinical foundation. Driven by a deep interest in child health, she secured admission on her first attempt into the prestigious MD in Pediatrics program at King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital in Mumbai, one of India’s premier tertiary healthcare and training institutions.

From Pediatrics to Pioneering Medical Genetics

expert.verse healthcarespotlightEven before embarking on her residency in Pediatrics in 2018, Dr. Prerana had identified her true calling: Medical Genetics. At the time, clinical genetics was still an emerging specialty in India, offered as a formal Doctorate of Medicine (DM) at only a single national institute.

Her clinical resolve crystallized when she encountered the digital advocacy channel @specialbooksbyspecialkids. Seeing real families share their lived experiences transformed textbook descriptions into human stories. The rare syndromes she had studied ceased to be abstract clinical entries, they became individuals with unique personalities, triumphs, and challenges.

This empathy, combined with clinical passion, led her to AIIMS, New Delhi, where she successfully completed her DM in Medical Genetics.

“Families with rare genetic disorders often spend years searching for answers, a long diagnostic odyssey where awareness is often the first missing step.” — Dr Prerana Modani

Ending the Diagnostic Odyssey: Public Advocacy and Impact

For many patients, securing a genetic diagnosis means enduring years of misdiagnoses and fragmented care. Dr. Prerana has made it her mission to bridge this gap through public education, clinical outreach, and medical awareness.

Through her social media platform (@prerana.decodes.rare), Dr. Prerana demystifies common yet frequently overlooked genetic conditions such as Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1). She often highlights fascinating historical context, such as clinical descriptions of Emperor Ashoka that suggest possible NF1 traits; showing how long these conditions have existed without widespread recognition.

Beyond awareness, she champions pre-conception carrier screening as a crucial form of preventive care. In India, where 1 in 25 individuals carries the gene for Beta Thalassemia and 1 in 40 for Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), she emphasizes that simple routine screening can transform family planning for young couples.

Scholarly Contributions

Alongside public outreach, she actively educates healthcare providers on the critical value of timely referrals to genetic specialists. Her dedication to scientific communication is equally evident in her academic contributions, In July 2026, she co-authored a clinical study titled “Impact of Enzyme Replacement Therapy on Patients with Late Onset Pompe Disease – Real World Data from a Developing Country”, published in the Indian Journal of Pediatrics. (DOI: 10.1007/s12098-026-06205-w)

Spotlight Interview: In Conversation with Dr Prerana Modani

Expert.Verse: What inspired you to transition from general pediatrics into medical genetics at a time when the field was still gaining traction in India?

Dr Prerana Modani: “During my pediatric training, I observed numerous families facing prolonged diagnostic delays for complex, multi-system disorders. Realizing that clinical genetics provided the key to early intervention, accurate prognosis, and preventive counseling convinced me that this was where I could make the greatest long-term impact.”

Expert.Verse: What message do you have for young couples planning a family regarding genetic health?

Dr Prerana Modani: “Genetic health should be an integral part of family planning, just like routine prenatal care. Pre-conception carrier screening for conditions like Beta Thalassemia and SMA gives couples clarity and choices. Awareness is empowerment.”

Beyond her clinical obligations, Dr. Prerana maintains a creative and compassionate life. In her free time, she enjoys photography and traveling. She also devotes her free hours to social volunteering, regularly teaching children from economically underprivileged backgrounds.

Looking toward the future, Dr. Modani aims to blend clinical precision with technological innovation. She aspires to design advanced medical machinery and diagnostic tools that reduce procedural duration and enhance interventional accuracy in clinical genetic procedures.
